My friends Peter and Amy and I taste tested 14 different popcorn productsone night. Six (out of seven!) were "movie style butter" or "extra butter" flavored microwave popcorns. I had a lot of fun, but the extra butter was really overwhelming! The savory aroma of microwave popcorn completely filled their loft. You couldn't escape the odor. It got into our hair, our clothes, our skin -- everything! It's going to be some time before I taste test seven butter laden microwave popcorns all at the same time!
The six "movie style butter/extra butter" flavored microwave popcorns that we taste tested were:
Act II Butter Lover's Microwave Popcorn
Jolly Time Blast O Butter Microwave Pop Corn
Orville Redenbachers Movie Theatre Butter
Orville Redenbachers Double Feature Butter -- Pour Over
Pop Secret Movie Theatre Butter
Safeway Theatre Style Microwave Popcorn -- Extra Butter Flavor
In our taste test, we rated the microwave popcorns on a scale of 1 to 5 -- with 1 = poor, 3 = average, and 5 = good. We started out with 11 categories to rate the popcorn on. However, I decided to report on the averages on only 4 of the 11 categories. The categories are: flavor, coloring, smell, and overall.

Act II Butter Lover's Microwave Popcorn
Overall
Act II's Butter Lover's Microwave Popcorn was below average overall.
My friends Amy and Peter and I gave Act II's Butter Lover's popcorn either a 3 or a 2 -- the average was 2.66 (based on a scale of 1(poor) to 5 (good).
Findings
I thought the popcorn was very yellow. This is probably due to fact that it had extra butter!
The popcorn was also very very salty.
Of course, it was also very very greasy.
This popcorn didn't really stand out from the rest -- it was neither really good, nor really bad.
Test Results
Flavor = 3.66
Coloring = 2.66
Smell = 4
Overall = 2.66

Jolly Time's Blast O Butter
Ultimate Theatre Style Butter Microwave Pop Corn
Overall
Jolly Time's Blast O Butter Ultimate Theatre Style Butter Microwave Pop Corn was only ok.
Findings
The popcorn was crispy and fresh (we just popped it!).
Jolly Time was generous with the amount of popcorn in the bag and most of the kernels popped.
The butter flavoring and coloring was good, but it didn't really taste like theatre style butter.
It was actually too salty for me. It would have been nice if they made this popcorn with either less or no salt.
Test Results
Flavor = 3
Coloring = 3
Smell = 3
Overall = 3.33
(Note: I'm a little surprised Peter rated Jolly Time's Blast O Butter with a 4!)

Orville Redenbacher's Reden Budders Movie Theater Butter
Overall
Orville Redenbacher's Reden Budders Movie Theater Butter microwave popcorn was average. On average, it rated squarely a 3 [on a scale of 1 (poor) to 5 (good)].
Findings
Good -- but average -- flavoring.
Extremely greasy -- but given it's a heavy butter popcorn, it's expected.
For this type of microwave popcorn, good coloring.
Impressive amount in bag. There were very little unpopped kernels.
Not a standout.

Smell = 3

Orville Redenbacher's Double Feature Butter -- Pour Over
Overall
Orville Redenbacher's Double Feature Butter Pour Over microwave popcorn was above average. On average, it rated a 3.66.
For these extra butter/movie style type of microwave popcorns, this was a good choice.
Findings
Good flavoring.
The thought of a "pour over" style popcorn can be intimidating. Don't let this keep you from trying this microwave popcorn. Just remember, when you put on the pour over butter, spread it slowly and evenly. Don't just plop the butter in one spot.
I recommend that you use a separate mixing bowl -- don't try to mix the butter and popcorn in the bag that "becomes a bowl" (the bag that it pops in). If you don't use another bowl, you won't be able to mix the butter and popcorn adequately. Trust me!
Of course, it was very greasy.
Again there was an impressive amount of popcorn in the bag.
The popped kernels were really jumbo popcorn -- as it says on the front of the box. I wonder, specifically, what kind of popping corn Orville Redenbacher uses.
Test Results
Flavor = 3.66
Coloring = 4 -- since you poured on the butter, it seemed less yellow.
Smell = 4
Overall = 3.66

Pop Secret Movie Theater Butter
Overall
Pop Secret's Movie Theater Butter microwave popcorn was also above average. It rated a whopping 4.33 -- the highest yet for these heavy and extra butter types!
Findings
Good to great flavoring. As my friend Amy put it: "A better butter flavor."
I felt that this popcorn had the great flavoring -- without the feeling of heavy grease or extra extra butter. It, on some level, felt or seemed like it was regular popcorn -- not movie theater butter popcorn.
Coloring was good -- not too too yellow for this heavily buttered popcorn.
Pop Secrets was one of the best overall! Try it!

Flavor = 4.33
Coloring = 4
Smell = 3
Overall = 4.33

Safeway Theater Style Microwave Popcorn Extra-Butter Flavor
Overall
We found Safeway's Theater Style Extra-Butter Flavor microwave popcorn to be average to below average.
Findings
Flavoring was ok, but my friend Amy said it had a "chemical taste."
This is a generic, no name brand -- and that's how it tasted. It was neither extremely poor or extremely good tasting.
Of course, the popcorn was very greasy.
Hate to say it: there are other brands out there that you may find to taste better. However, if costs is an issue, this brand won't fail you.

Flavor = 3.33
Coloring = 4
Smell = 2.66
Overall = 2.66
